In the CSR debate, Planet refers to sustainable environmental practices. Within the ICT sector, the debate on managing the environmental footprint covers ICT companies` premises and production processes and the larger impact on our cities and households.

What are the environmental impacts of the ICT sector? What positive effects will arise from the application and use of CSR in ICT? How innovative ICT can be used for more efficient environmental management? How can ICT goods and services actively help to improve sustainability?

The Blue Angel guarantees that a product or service meets high standards when it comes to its environmental, health and performance characteristics. In the process, these products and services are always evaluated across their entire life cycle. Criteria are developed for each individual product group that must be fulfilled by those products and services awarded with the Blue Angel. And in order to reflect technological advances, the Federal Environmental Agency reviews these criteria every three to four years. This process requires companies to constantly improve the environmental friendliness of their products over time.
The Blue Angel is a label initiated by the German government and awarded by an independent Jury to products that are environmentally friendlier than others serving the same use. It is to assist consumers in their purchase decisions.

ENERGY STAR is a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) voluntary programme that helps businesses and individuals save money and protect our climate through superior energy efficiency. The ENERGY STAR programme was established by EPA in 1992, under the authority of the Clean Air Act Section 103(g). Section103(g) of the Clean Air Act directs the Administrator to "conduct a basic engineering research and technology program to develop, evaluate, and demonstrate non–regulatory strategies and technologies for reducing air pollution." In 2005, Congress enacted the Energy Policy Act. Section 131 of the Act amends Section 324 (42 USC 6294) of the Energy Policy and Conservation Act, and "established at the Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency a voluntary programme to identify and promote energy–efficient products and buildings in order to reduce energy consumption, improve energy security, and reduce pollution through voluntary labeling of or other forms of communication about products and buildings that meet the highest energy efficiency standards."

The EU Ecolabel helps identify products and services that have a reduced environmental impact throughout their life cycle, from the extraction of raw material through to production, use and disposal. The EU Ecolabel scheme is a commitment to environmental sustainability. The criteria have been developed and agreed upon by scientists, NGOs and stakeholders to create a credible and reliable way to make environmentally responsible choices.
From the raw materials to manufacturing, packaging, distribution and disposal, EU Ecolabel products are evaluated by independent experts to ensure they meet criteria that reduce their environmental impact. The life cycle of a product begins with extraction – the mining or cultivation of the raw materials, such as cotton (for textiles) or wood (for paper products). It continues with manufacturing and packaging, distribution, use and finally the “end of life” stage, when the product is disposed of or recycled. When developing EU Ecolabel criteria for products, the focus is on the stages where the product has the highest environmental impact, and this differs from product to product.
