People

In CSR terms, the question of People relates to fair and beneficial business practices toward staff and towards the local and wider community where a company conducts its business.

What are the effects of the business practices upon its staff? How can ICT companies enhance their CSR policies through better HR management, upgrading skills, promoting access to all and communicating about it? What kind of management and practices can help promote CSR within ICT companies and have a positive impact on the wider community?

The idea is to share processes and products that can help promote such practices within ICT companies taking into account a better work environment but also the supply chain, the user experience and the results it has on their business competitiveness and the impact it leads throughout the economy and society.

The APRENDER Project, Education for Special Needs, is an interactive multimedia resource focused on students with special needs in education. It is part of the bilateral cooperation agreements between the Ministry of Education and Science and various regions, like Extremadura, for the development of the actions described in the Framework Agreement "Internet in the School" signed by the Ministries of Education, Culture and Sport and Science and Technology, as a part of the action plan Info XXI.
The “Internet in the Classroom” program provides continuity to the actions implemented under the previous program "Internet in the School". The “Internet in the Classroom” program is being conducted to provide basic information and communication infrastructure to all schools in Spain. This project has helped to achieve a critical mass of computers, laptops, whiteboards, multimedia projectors and peripherals for integration into the daily activities of the classroom.
The main objective of the “Aprender” project is to offer a series of educational resources specialy designed to meet the demands of disabled users.
It provides parents and teachers with additional aid in personal training for the user and introduce him/her in the management and use of new technologies. This has been developed by designing specific activities for each one of the disabilities and its circumstances. Student identification with the characters, their autonomy degree, the accessibility, the consistency between design and content, among other things, have been some of the aspects that has been reflected and recorded the whole philosophy of the resource.

Citizens Online have been working in the sector for 15 years, innovating local partnerships to embed digital inclusion and helping to build digitally resilient communities. Our white paper ‘The case for a systemic approach to digital skills‘ shows what we have learnt about what’s important for digital inclusion.
Our long-term partnership with BT running the Get IT Together Programme has been a huge success, not just helping over 20,000 people to gain digital skills but also demonstrate a social value to those new internet users of £1,064.
We are also very pleased to be working in a new cross-sector partnership with AbilityNet, Age UK, Affinity Sutton, and SCVO led by Digital Unite.
Citizens Online is a national charity that was set up to tackle the issues of digital exclusion, to make sure that the Internet is available to everybody and to help individuals and communities understand and gain the benefits of being online.
We work in a number of ways, offering a powerful approach to digital inclusion that can be both sustainable and scalable.

CGI, a leading global information technology and business process services company, is partnering with Cre8te Opportunities Ltd, an Edinburgh-based social enterprise, to support the provision of digital training for elderly, unemployed and socially isolated people living in Edinburgh.
Cre8te helps to reduce the digital skills gap amongst disadvantaged groups through online training, to support them to become more independent and connected with their communities. CGI is funding a digital skills tutor at Cre8te’s Digital Skills Academy, in the Craigmillar area of the city, as part of the company’s support for local communities across Scotland. The financial arrangement will allow Cre8te to continue providing its support and training through its Use IT programme – a basic digital literacy course to give unemployed people IT skills to help them with job applications and into work.

When we speak about Digital literacy, we shouldn‘t think only about broadening the scope or increasing the number of those digitally literate. In the next step we shouldn‘t overlook is the depth and the quality of this kind of literacy. Are those in power positions or those in socially important positions literate enough? Have they reached a professional level? Do their digital literacy skills hinder or enable more efficient ways of operating in everyday job situations? Also there’s the question of responsibility and safety. Are those responsible for spread of digital literacy competent enough to safeguard their learners from threats?
Interesting project in this respect is e-Guardian project (Lithuania) endorsed by ECDL. The main aim of e-Guardian is to educate broad scope of audience about how to safeguard themselves from threats on the Internet and how to become competent e-citizens instead of scaring them using computers and Internet.
