Cross cutting themes

Better promoting CSR means taking into account the cross-cutting themes and their impacts on society as a whole & benefits for responsible business. Key themes for discussion arise for the digital economy: What is the link between Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and competitiveness? How can enterprises exploit this link, through market research, branding, communication or public procurement incentives? Can social innovation be seen as an investment? How can a company respond to social needs in an innovative way, while creating added value for itself? How can a company promote an innovative offer that satisfies the demands of society? Where does responsible Innovation and corporate social responsibility overlap? How do we combine respect for ethics and sustainability? ICT tools enable transparency, accountability and powerful, immediate and interactive communication. Can they help CSR and how?

Within CSR practices, the cross cutting themes breaks down into key themes including CSR and competitiveness, ICT and Social Innovation, ICT and Responsible Innovation, Self- and Co-regulation, ICT tools enabling better CSR management.

| Code of conduct/guidelines/standard/certification | Privacy | Towards Responsible Research and Innovation in the Information and Communication Technologies and Security Technologies Fields - A Report from the European Commission Services – 2011

This book brings together early results of research and coordination projects funded under the European Commission funded Science in Society programme (FP7) which addresses the Research and Technology Development phase or the application phase of new technologies. These projects yield insights on how our understanding of privacy may change in the light of those technologies, and how privacy is weighed against other ethical values related to security and practical convenience. These research and coordination efforts usually do not address only single, particular technologies since the privacy issue will be shaped by the simultaneous use of various technologies and address relevant EC directives and national legislation.

| Business Ethics | Code of conduct/guidelines/standard/certification | CSR issues in the ICT hardware manufacturing sector - SOMO ICT Sector Report

The ICT sector is young, complex, growing and dynamic. From the perspective of sustainable development there is less attention paid to this industry than there is to other manufacturing industries. Until recently, media and public attention on the issue of labour standards had focused primarily on the garment and footwear sectors. Research has revealed, however, that there are major problems in the production of hardware. This report aims to raise awareness of the environmental, human and regulation problems in the ICT sector, and in particular in the production of hardware. Secondly the studies carried out by SOMO aim to widen the campaign base in the ICT hardware sector in Europe and elsewhere, to provide information for campaigns and to lobby on improving conditions in the ICT supply chain.

| Code of conduct/guidelines/standard/certification | CSR Management System | ISO 26000 – Social Responsibility

ISO 26000 provides guidance on how businesses and organizations can operate in a socially responsible way. This means acting in an ethical and transparent way that contributes to the health and welfare of society.
ISO 26000:2010 provides guidance rather than requirements, so it cannot be certified to unlike some other well-known ISO standards. Instead, it helps clarify what social responsibility is, helps businesses and organizations translate principles into effective actions and shares best practices relating to social responsibility, globally. It is aimed at all types of organizations regardless of their activity, size or location.
The standard was launched in 2010 following five years of negotiations between many different stakeholders across the world. Representatives from government, NGOs, industry, consumer groups and labour organizations around the world were involved in its development, which means it represents an international consensus.
